Russian charged in Afghan attack makes U.S. court appearance

By Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A former Russian army officer facing terrorism charges for a 2009 attack on U.S. and Afghan forces made an initial appearance in federal court on Tuesday, the Justice Department said. The suspect, Irek Ilgiz Hamidullin, was arrested in November 2009 and held by the Department of Defense in Afghanistan. He was turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday, the department said in a statement. Hamidullin was appointed a federal public defender during the hearing in U.S. District Court in Richmond, Virginia. … …read more
