Guillaume Devauchelle, who oversees innovation at Valeo, a major parts supplier to vehicle manufacturers, believes that lidar will be the basis for all autonomous vehicles.

Lidar (pronounced LIE-dar) is an abbreviation for light detection and ranging. It is a sensor that is used for many autonomous car designs. The same technology is used to detect speeding violations and to outline terrain from airplanes.

Waymo, the self-driving car program, is one of many that uses lidar. Waymo is currently looking for East Valley volunteers to use its automated vehicles for free rides around the metro area for the entire family.

The technology uses near-infrared light to detect the shape of objects around it. Lidar can produce exact 3D images of everything from trees to cars to cyclists in many environments and under different lighting conditions. Although autonomous car designs use many different sensors, including radar, ultrasonic and video cameras, lidar has unique abilities. Lidar can for example not be fooled by shadows or be blinded by bright sunlight.

The biggest obstacle to widespread lidar adoption is cost, and that is where a number of battles are being waged.

When Google originally started with autonomous vehicle research eight years ago, a lidar sensor made by Velodyne Lidar, an industry leader, cost about $75,000. Although Velodyne declined to comment on the current price, John Krafcik, Waymo’s chief executive, mentioned recently that his company had reduced the cost of its lidar system by 90 percent.

Even at $7,500, such systems are regarded as being too expensive for car manufacturers.

Omer Keilaf, chief executive of Innoviz Technologies, a lidar developer based in Israel noted that car manufacturers want it to cost $100 and perform 10 times better, be smaller, and very reliable. This has created a big vacuum in the industry.

The race to fill that gap is mainly focused on the manufacture of solid-state lidar systems. This would reduce the size of the sensors by eliminating moving parts involved in optical mechanisms and enable mass manufacturing that would ultimately reduce costs.

Established automotive suppliers, such as Valeo and Velodyne; technology companies like Uber and Waymo; and relative newcomers like LeddarTech, Innoviz and Quanergy are all trying to make cheaper sensors.

Solid-state lidars generally have a reduced field of view – about 120 degrees compared to the 360-degree view that rooftop models are capable of. To create all round vision, four to six solid-state lidar sensors would have to be integrated.

Most researchers working on lidar designs believe they can manufacture them for much lower prices. In its Ioniq autonomous test cars, Hyundai has demonstrated how such sensors could be made less conspicuous by concealing them in the bumpers and roof pillars of vehicles.

Luminar Technologies is focusing on extending the effective range of lidar to more than 200 meters. Current top-of-the-line sensors have a range of 120 meters. Austin Russell, Luminar’s chief executive, noted that they achieved the extended range by using more sensitive receivers, as well as more powerful light outputs that are still safe enough to not damage people’s vision.

Velodyne claims to be the only third-party lidar supplier for fully autonomous vehicles currently being tested. The company is aware that start-ups are gunning for its business and is working on its own solid-state Velarray lidar sensor. Mike Jellen, Velodyne president revealed that they plan on starting mass production next year.

In spite of considerable speculation about Velodyne’s lidar pricing, Jellen declined to estimate how much their new sensors might cost, saying only that a complete lidar sensor package might be priced in the “low thousands” per vehicle.

Other companies manufacturing complete autonomous driving packages expect prices to fall faster.

Jeffrey Owens, chief technology officer for Delphi expects that in five years, the price could be about $8,000, dropping down to $5,000 by 2025. Delphi recently announced it was working with BMW, Intel and Mobileye on an autonomous driving platform.

The post Lidar – The Eagle Eye of Self-Driving Cars first appeared on Plymouth Daily News.

Men have always been fascinated by their toys, be it computers, stereos, fancy watches, power mowers, or remote controls. This list has been expanding gradually as new toys become available and now includes video games. The numbers are mind-boggling – 155 million Americans play video games. This is more than the number who voted in the presidential election last November.

For serious gamers, the definition of heaven must surely be the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

E3 was until now not open to the public and only those who are part of the video gaming industry were able to attend. This year however, officials of E3 have decided to open the expo to the public, with a limited number (15,000) full access seats being made available. See this article for full details.

A number of recent studies reveal that more than 40 percent of Americans play at least three hours of video games per week, with a staggering 5 million playing 40 hours per week. Research also reveals that the average young American will now spend the same number of hours playing as that person spent in middle- and high-school classrooms combined by the time he or she turns 21.

Video gaming is however not limited to the younger generation. What used to be a niche activity confined to preadolescents and adolescents a few decades ago has become increasingly popular for all races, genders and ages. Video games has in fact ascended internationally to a scale that rivals sports, film, and television. The one thing all these activities have in common is that they offer an escape.

Statistics show that working-class men in their 20s were working four hours less per week on average and playing video games for three hours compared to the beginning of the millennium. They had in fact replaced the work time lost with playtime spent gaming.

Erik Hurst, a professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business is alarmed by what this means for those who chose to play video games and were not working. Hurst cited the dire long-term prospects of these less-employed men and pointed to relative levels of drug use, financial instability and suicide among this group.

In spite of many American having replaced work hours with game play, they have ended up happier.

Gamers have their own fantasies of prosperity and these fantasies sometimes come true. Gaming has already become a viable and lucrative profession for a few. The richest competitive gamer is reportedly Saahil Arora, an American college dropout who plays professional Dota 2. Using the name UNiVeRsE, Arora has earned $2.7 million in his career so far.

Arora’s income is however tiny compared to a handful of YouTube stars with a fraction of his talent. By filming themselves playing games in a ridiculously excitable state for a young audience of followers, their income from subscriptions and ads is somewhere in the mid seven figures.

One thing women should however understand is that in spite of men’s preoccupation with their toys, it doesn’t mean that these are the most important things in their life. In his book “Boys and Their Toys“, author Bill Adler Jr. shows what makes men tick and strives to help women grow closer to them in the process.

The post Boys and Their Toys – Times Are Changing first appeared on Plymouth Daily News.

Nowadays, many school age children have smartphones that they take with them to school on a daily basis. As a parent, there’s nothing more alarming and also embarrassing about finding out that your child has been caught viewing pornography at school. After this happens, you’re faced with the unpleasant task of discussing the issue with your child. You also then have to try to get your child back in class to prevent the episode from detracting from their academic potential. In some situations you may need to hire legal counsel to fully understand all of your options and make sure that the allegations don’t create lingering complications.

The following are four steps to take if your son or daughter has been expelled from school because of smartphone pornography access:

Contact your school and your school guidance counselor – You’ll probably first be notified that your child was expelled by a call from your school. As soon as possible, get all the information available about the terms of your child’s expelling. Often, your child will be permitted to re-enroll after a certain period of time has passed or if your child undergoes some disciplinary actions or agrees to regularly visit the guidance counselor.

Discuss the issue with your child – This is typically the most difficult part of dealing with the situation. However, most parents have more trepidation than is necessary when talking to their children about sex. When discussing the issue of pornography access at school with your child, you need to determine if your child has an addiction problem. If this is the case, professional counseling and treatment may be necessary before your child is prepared to re-enroll.

Try to go through with options for re-enrollment – Obviously, you need to get your child back in school as soon as possible so that he or she can continue with their education. If your school has offered certain options for re-enrollment or has said that re-enrollment will be possible once a given period of time has passed, re-enroll as soon as possible or talk to your child about any disciplinary actions the school requires so that your son or daughter can re-enroll.

Consider other educational possibilities – If you cannot re-enroll, you may need to begin looking at other educational possibilities to keep your child on course academically. If there are no other public school your child can attend and private schools are un-affordable, consider homeschooling or taking advantage of some online schooling options that are available nowadays.

The days of getting hired by a single company and setting up camp for thirty years are dwindling.

Nowadays, more and more people are opting to find freelance work as a primary source of income. As it stands, more than one-third of all American adults work as freelancers within their industry. Not only are individuals looking for more freelance gigs, but companies are also hopping on the bandwagon, outsourcing specific projects to specialized contract workers more now than in previous years.

So, what are the reasons behind this trend?

Freedom

Freelancing offers much more freedom than working in a salaried position.

Rather than having to spend 40 hours sitting in a cubicle (regardless of how long it actually takes to get the assigned work done), since freelancers work on a project-by-project basis, they only need to be “on” when there’s work to do. They don’t end up wasting time staring at the clock after all their work is finished, just waiting for the five o’clock whistle.

Freelancers also usually don’t have to be on-site when working for a specific company, and can complete their assignments from wherever they choose. This gives them the freedom to work from home, the coffee shop, or even while on the road. About 66% of freelancers report this benefit to be a major factor influencing their decision to leave the traditional workplace.

Efficiency

As mentioned, freelancers don’t have to spend 40 hours sitting at their desk just because they’re contractually obligated to.

But that doesn’t mean freelancers don’t work as much. In fact, due to the nature of the project-based system, many freelancers work at least 40 hours or more per week. However, since freelancers are only paid to get work done (and not just spend time at their desk), they use every moment they have to their advantage. For freelancers, the saying “time is money” is absolutely true.

Furthermore, 73% of freelancers report that emerging technology has made it easier to find and schedule upcoming gigs. The internet has seen a large growth of freelance-based websites on which contractors can post a project and individuals can apply for the gig on a one-off basis. Not only that, but online scheduling software has made finding clients, scheduling projects, and maintaining relationships a cinch for freelancers.

Quite simply, freelancing allows workers to focus on actually working, without having to deal with the red tape that comes with a traditional job.

More In-Demand

On the flip side of things, more and more companies are turning to freelancers to get projects done quickly and efficiently.

Roughly three-fourths of US-based companies report they plan to work with freelancers in the coming years rather than hire on more full-time employees. Because they would only need individuals to help out on projects for a small amount of time, it makes sense they would rather hire freelance workers than to seek out traditional employees whose services would no longer be needed once the project is finished.

Furthermore, employers are becoming increasingly aware of the cost of providing benefits to full-time employees. As freelance workers are not technically employees of the companies who hire them, employers are under no obligation to provide them with health insurance or other benefits.

Overall, as employment policies and trends shift over time, we are likely to see “traditional” employment become a thing of the past, and freelancing usher in a new era of productivity in the modern world.

The post Freelancing Becoming the New Norm first appeared on Plymouth Daily News.

Social media has become to go-to for many companies’ advertising campaigns. While traditional norms – TV and radio commercials, magazine advertisements, etc. – still exist, they’re not nearly as effective as they used to be. For most modern companies, getting noticed is all about how well their social media platform performs.

Though many digital marketing guidelines remain constant, we’ve seen a shift in the way in which companies go about getting their names in front of their audience. The following trends are becoming ever-present on social media, and are only continuing to gain momentum moving forward.

Live Streaming and Video

Live streaming – whether in quick, short bursts or elongated video podcasts – has become a main focus of both large and small businesses today.

Using apps such as Snapchat and Periscope, companies create small video snippets that are usually entertaining, informational, or both – but also act as advertisements. However, unlike television or YouTube commercials that the user has to sit through before being able to watch the content they actually want to watch, these snippets are viewed by choice. And, since these apps are essentially for mobile use, companies are able to reach potential customers while they’re on the go.

Use of longform video is also increasing, with applications such as Facebook Live being put to good use by marketers and companies around the world. These videos don’t require airtime on paid-for channels, rather can be posted live right on a company’s Facebook page. These videos can help build interest and anticipation for new releases or upcoming events within a company.

Social Content Publishing

The days of convincing customers to purchase a product by claiming to be the best are long gone.

What consumers are looking for now is value and dedication. Companies can no longer just say they want their industry to flourish – they have to prove how invested they really are. The best way to do this is through publishing free content that informs and educates those interested in a specific industry or niche.

Recreational clothing company L.L. Bean, for example, keeps its blog up to date with stories of kayaking dangerous waters and hiking vast mountainsides. In doing so, the company shows it’s not just about selling products – it’s about maintaining a lifestyle.

For any business to thrive in today’s modern world, they have to actually care about the services they provide.

Consumers as Influencers

It’s easier now than ever before for social media users to share information with one another. Every major platform allows its users to share a link, picture, video, or message, with a single mouse click.

And companies know this.

Social media managers have begun leveraging their fans, creating advertising webs that span through these fans’ entire online network. If even a small percentage of the company’s fans’ network become interested, the effort was worth it.

This works mainly because friends trust each other. If one person shares a video, his closest friends are going to trust there’s value in it, and watch it too. If all goes well for the company, this friend will share it as well, and the chain will continue.

Save

The post 2016’s Top Social Media Trends first appeared on Plymouth Daily News.

While running an online business, you probably have a ton of questions about search engine optimization.

One of your main concerns likely revolves around the future of search engine functionality: How, exactly, do search engines work today, and how will they work in the coming years?

If you’ve done any research whatsoever on the topic of search engine optimization, you know that sites like Google are getting smarter and smarter as time goes on. Thanks to functions such as Google RankBrain, search engines are better equipped to assist Internet users than ever before.

RankBrain works in conjunction with other functionalities within Google’s search engine algorithms to get a true understanding of what a user is searching for. Search engines no longer simply focus on specific keywords and phrases as if in a vacuum; they now can understand semantics, synonyms, and syntax, providing users with more relevant results and suggestions for further reading.

RankBrain also understands context, as well. For example, if a user searches for “leonardo inception,” Google would know to look for pages relevant to Leonardo DiCaprio, and exclude pages referring to Leonardo DaVinci.

What does this mean for online companies, though?

Simply put, SEO is becoming more and more organic than ever before. Blackhat techniques, such as keyword stuffing, will no longer do your site any good – in fact, you’ll likely be penalized for such. The quality of your content – the information you provide, links and resources given, and more – is incredibly important if you want your page to rank well.

If you’ve always relied on shortcuts and tricks to rank highly on SERPs, you’re in for a rude awakening. On the other hand, if you’ve always been focused on providing the best content possible to your customers, Google’s improvements may begin to help you get the recognition you’ve always deserved.

The post How Google’s Algorithms are Changing the Face of SEO first appeared on Plymouth Daily News.

For American users that will be call center, or contact center, customer services, etc. Whatever product or service you are using, from a desktop computer to a mobile phone/smartphone to your ISP, chances are that at some point you will want not simply on-line help but telephone help.

Call centres extend far beyond that though, they date back to the 1960s when for most of us computers were massive machines that we saw occasionally in science fiction films or real life documentaries. In the UK, the call centre of the Birmingham Post & Mail newspaper dates to 1965. In 1972, British Gas installed a call centre in Wales that was capable of handling 20,000 calls a week. This is said also to have been the worlds first multilingual or perhaps we should say bilingual call centre.

For the modern call centre, that fluency in other languages is important, especially if that other language is English, because English is not only the language of the Western world, it is the language of international business and indeed of the known Universe. While Indian graduates, Arab sheikhs and Chinese businessmen often put native English speakers to shame, locating call centres for the English-speaking world in countries where it is spoken as a second language can be a risky business, because although words may translate, often meanings do not. This, and other factors such as telephonists reading from a script or keeping someone holding and holding and holding can leave a caller with a sense of exasperation, as anyone visiting the British Telecom users forum will appreciate.

British Telecom uses call centres in both India and the UK, but the nation which now leads the world in call centres is the Philippines, where Visaya Knowledge Process is based. The company was launched with 14 employees, but in February this year it was reported to have grown to over 200. Even so, it is a small player in a sector which is said to employ a million workers. The standard of English spoken in the Philippines is said to be more American than in India.

What is the future of customer services besides multi language support? The most obvious answer would be customer support for mobile users. The latest statistics show that over two-thirds of American adults have a smartphone! That is surely something that shouldn’t be overlooked and every company should address means of getting different options of customer service to these users. In my opinion this is the future and the future is here and now!

The post The Rise And Future Of The Call Centre In Business Customer Service first appeared on Plymouth Daily News.

A website can be a small business owner’s best tool for advertising to, and connecting with, potential customers. Displaying information about your business, the services you offer, and even special deals helps consumers when making decisions. Investing in a website is very important for a business owner, but with all of the website building options available, it can be difficult to know what is the best choice is. Since 2005 most small business owners have begun using systems that are considered built on a CMS (Content Management System) allowing them to edit pictures, add blogs and make changes to their websites without having the knowledge of coding, html and using FTP software. With millions of small businesses starting on an annual basis the field for web design and marketing services, is ultra competitive with one platform (WordPress) controlling over 25% of the market share for total sites and nearly 60% of all CMS platforms. Small business owners often don’t realize some of the risks associated with free or open source CMS platforms.

Popular DIY website builders like Weebly, Wix, and GoDaddy provide pre-designed and coded templates that business owners can utilize to build their sites. These platforms tend to be offered at a lower cost, since the website owner will be the one doing the work. They often include things like web hosting, emails, and sometimes a domain name in the cost giving a “one-stop-shop” appeal for users. The goal behind these website builders is to make it simple for anyone to use. There are a few issues, however, that people can run into when using softwares like these:

All the functionality you need might not be available. (i.e. e-commerce & blogging)

There is usually only a certain level of customization allowed.
Sites built on these platforms may share a generic resemblance.
Additional charges can be incurred for needed “extras” including storage and bandwidth.
Outsourced help may be needed to achieve what is beyond the user’s knowledge, which is time-consuming and costly.

A small business owner needs to consider how proficient with computers he or she is before choosing a content management system (CMS) like this. One should also be mindful of how often he or she will need to update content on the website. Are there frequently-changing coupons? Do you have event occurrences or blogs that need to be posted weekly, monthly, etc? Time is valuable, and although these DIY website builders are meant to be quick and easy, that is not always the case unless one has at least some prior experience. These website builders do typically have 24/7 support forums and call centers that are available to answer questions. Without some knowledge, however, you could find yourself calling and emailing constantly which slows your productivity. Some support teams have better reputations than others, so you want to do your research. A small business owner does not have the time to be placed on endless holds or wait days for email responses.

Small Business Owners Often Have No Insight Into Open Source versus Closed Source content management platforms

Another very important thing to consider, aside from usability, is safety. Open-source content management systems like those mentioned above allow for third-party “plugins” to be installed for enhanced functionality. Those plugins are easily hacked since they are rarely updated, as pointed out by a recent Search Engine Journal article highlighting this occurrence with WordPress sites specifically. By compromising these plugins, hackers can gain access to the websites that use them. With so much unsecure access to websites on platforms like WordPress, a hacker who infiltrates the software is able to do so not only to 1 site, but millions. This is one method used, but your website can be hacked a number of ways, so security needs to be priority with your website hosting and software company. These hacks could turn into the spread of viruses to website visitors, and cause real harm to the sites themselves. Depending on the damage done to a site that has been hacked, it could take years to “clean-up” the site for search engines to begin trusting and ranking it again. This means incurring even more costs finding a reputable company to perform the necessary restoration.

Considering user-friendliness and safety, hiring a website development and management company might be a good option for small business owners to consider. The cost would be higher, as you are paying for the expertise, security, and support of a dedicated team. There are thousands of companies who market for web design services, using some reference webistes like Top 10 Designs or clutch.co can help you to find some providers who are using alternativce CMS plaforms. One company we discovered that offers a CMS platform for web design not built on WordPress was High Level Marketing of West Bloomfield Michigan. They were rated as a top 10 firm and are using a platform called MYCE. Most importantly, it is exclusive to High Level Marketing clients, meaning that it is not an open source platform which provides some additional level of security options for small business owners to help reduce the potential that their website may be compromised. According to Justin Fishaw, a company spokesperson with High Level Marketing “We have been providing design services on the MYCE platform since 2009 and have worked with thousands of small business owners. Once a business owner becomes aware of the security challenges of open source, they are more confident in working with a boutique design agency for the extra security and exclusive designs we are able to offer.”

Companies Like High Level Marketing and Eggbeater Marketing Separate Their Design Portfolio Through Custom Built Software

Using a company like High Level Marketing, Kohactive or Seven Designs to build your website, you are not limited choosing your design based on pre-developed templates. The design of your website will be customized to best represent your business, meaning you have a say in what it looks like. This allows for creativity outside of the “cookie-cutter” look sites might share using platforms like Squarespace. When editing or adding content, it’s always ideal to work with a system that keeps things formatted consistency throughout your site, so the integrity of your design is maintained.

As a small business owner, you want to treat your website as a resource and an investment in your business. You need it to work for you, not create more work for you. Take the time to weigh your options before choosing the safest and most sensible route for building your website.

Thanks to Don from High Level Marketing for giving us some great insights in helping small business owners to save money with their adwords and paid advertising expenses. You may not realize it but negative keywords can do wonders for your Google Adwords campaigns. There are three specific things that negative keywords can do for your adwords campaign and knowing what they can do will make a huge difference. It is important to first talk about what a negative keyword is, this means a keyword that has been set as an exclusion or that has been set aside to help narrow search fields and funnel only the most interested people to your site.

Negative keywords can first and foremost narrow the search field to exclude sites and searches that offer items and services that you do not offer. This means that just because you have a keyword that may show up in that search, it is not going to show your site in the search unless you do offer those services. This will help make the search process easier and will increase the traffic of those that actually want to see your site as opposed to those that may have just stumbled upon your site with no real intention of visiting it.

Negative keywords can also show your ads to people that are more likely to actually click on them. This means that your ads are not going to be wasted on people that are not going to follow them and that are not going to utilize what you are offering. This will greatly help to insure that your ads are as efficient and useful as possible and that you are getting in touch with the most interested customers that you can possibly find.

Lastly, negative keywords can help reduce the overall cost of your advertisements and your campaigns by making sure that the money you are spending is going to get you the return that you want. This will help insure that your money is being put to good use and that you are getting the most for the ads that you are placing and the money that you are spending.

One of the signature characteristics of the Cupertino giant is it’s fearless innovation. Whilst they weren’t the first to develop MP3 players, smart phones, or tablets, they were certainly the first major company to produce, promote, and stand behind what were still massive technological innovations at the time.

But is all experimentation good? Does every new idea that Apple touches turn to gold? The results of their latest ventures into new areas would clearly indicate ‘No’. Both their latest offerings in advertising and iOS updates have dented their stellar reputation.

Apple’s approach to advertising has taken a significant and dramatic shift in the last three years. Their traditional, and frequently very successful campaigns centered around interaction and story-telling are now a thing of the past as they shift towards a more ‘practical’ approach – not something industry leading companies do very often.

One obvious example is the latest iPhone ad released earlier this month. Gone is the emphasis on beauty, style, and ease of use. This is an ad about hardware and software. It’s an ad about nuts and bolts and programming – something never before seen come out of the Apple advertising machine.

Their first ad of the campaign, “Hardware”, tries to devaluate its competitors. This isn’t even comparable to Samsung’s A/B comparison type ads. Both Apple’s ads, “Hardware” and “Loved”, try to do something Apple never really seemed to believe in, which is talking at their audience without any real interaction that would be capable of connecting with them.

This ad campaign has received a lot of negative feedback, and it isn’t even being termed of Apple’s standard by many, especially when compared to their “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” campaign which ended in 2009. Also, this ad campaign had also been followed with numerous other successful and popular ad campaigns, and maybe this is the reason hopes always seem to be high from each and every ad campaign Apple comes up with. However, considering that this “If it’s not an iPhone, it’s not an iPhone” campaign doesn’t come with the appealing factors Apple’s ad campaigns usually come with, it seems to be receiving quite a bit of criticism.

The “Hardware” tries to place emphasis on the importance of building their own hardware and software in tandem, something that can obviously be taken as an attempt to criticize Samsung and other OEMs, which depend on Google’s fragmented Android operating system. On the other hand, “Loved” tries to reveal the quality of user experience an iPhone provides, saying 99 percent of the iPhone users love it. It also goes on to show colorful videos in iPhone of its users having a lot of fun. Now though this did seem to be a better attempt too many, it was also a bit unfocused to manage to leave the desired effect.

Advertising isn’t the only area the company’s experimentation is having an impact.

Besides its slightly shocking ad campaign, even its latest iOS upgrade seems to be raising a lot of eyebrows. Though the latest iOS upgrade, iOS 8.4, seems to be getting the basics right, it’s also creating a new wave of headaches for consumers. Firstly, some changes it comes with may mess up your iTunes, and go on to butchering the Home Sharing feature. Users will no longer be able to downgrade to iOS 8.3 even if they wish. This, in many people’s opinions, is a plainly stupid move, and will result in more people turning to iPhone unlocking and iPhone jailbreaking to get the features and functions they want in their iPhone.

While it’s important for companies to continuously reinvent themselves and stay at the forefront of innovation and technological advancement, not all changes are for the best. Apple’s clearly committed to maintaining their position as market leaders, but given failure of their latest adventures in innovation, it might be a good opportunity to stop and assess this new direction to make sure it’s the right one for the future of Apple.

The post Apple’s reputation starts to slip as their experimentation goes awry first appeared on Plymouth Daily News.
